We came across a beautiful American Elm tree outside the historic Eldorado Ballroom in Houston Texas in 3rd ward. This historic ballroom in 3rd ward has been home to so many major artists in Black history including performers such as Ray Charles, Etta James, Jimmy Reed, Guitar Slim Eddie Jones, etc. going back to its opening in 1939. We’ve been told that this tree was there the day the ballroom opened up and it’s wonderful to see this tree still standing inspite of storms, hurricanes and the rapid development of this area.

Can you imagine Ray Charles and his band taking a break under this tree before running in to set this ballroom on fire with their set? This is living Black history so next time you are in 3rd ward stop by and check out this silent witness to Black heritage.
